How an online NVQ actually works, if you have never done one

No classroom, no exam, no revision. An NVQ assesses the work you already do - here is what your assessor actually needs from you, and how to gather it without slowing your week down.

The word qualification puts people off. It brings up school: classrooms, revision, an exam you can fail.

An NVQ is not that. Understanding what it really is removes most of the reason people put it off.

It is an assessment, not a course

There is nothing to sit through and nothing to memorise. An NVQ asks a single question: does the work this person does meet the national standard for this occupation?

Your assessor's job is to find out, using evidence from the jobs you are doing anyway. Nobody is teaching you your trade. You already have it. This documents it.

What counts as evidence

Photographs of your work, including work in progress rather than only the finished job. Job records, method statements, risk assessments and site paperwork you already fill in. Witness testimony from a supervisor or employer who has seen you work.

And a professional discussion - a conversation with your assessor about how you approach the work, why you do things the way you do, and what you would do differently in different conditions. For a lot of people this is where most of the evidence comes from, because talking about your own trade is easy.

Doing it online

Online assessment means the evidence comes to the assessor rather than the assessor coming to you. Photographs and documents are uploaded; the discussion happens over a video call at a time that suits you.

For someone working full time, this is the difference between finishing and not finishing. There is no day off, no travel, and no waiting for an assessor to be in your area.

How long it takes

The timescale depends on you, not on a college term. The people who finish fastest do the same thing: they take photographs as they work, from the start, instead of trying to reconstruct three months of evidence at the end.

Two minutes on your phone at the end of a task, and the qualification largely builds itself.

What you get

A nationally recognised qualification, and with it the CSCS card that matches your level - Blue at Level 2, Gold at Level 3, Black at Level 4 and above.

More practically: access to sites that will not let you through the gate without the right card, and a rate that reflects what you can actually do.

The common worry

"My reading and writing are not great." This stops more people than anything else, and it should not. An NVQ is not a written exam. Evidence can be photographs and conversation, and assessors work with people in this position constantly. Say so at the start and it gets accommodated.
